Operator take: Traffic from AI assistants is now real, measurable, and growing — and most brands aren’t tracking it, so they’re blind to a channel that’s quietly sending them customers. Set up AI-referral tracking now. What you can’t see, you can’t grow. This is early enough that even basic measurement puts you ahead.
Referral visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and other AI surfaces are increasingly showing up in analytics as identifiable traffic sources. For a while, AI-driven visits were invisible or lumped into “direct.” Now you can actually see them — if you set up to look.
Why this matters
AI assistants have quietly become a discovery channel. People ask an AI for a recommendation, click through to a brand it named, and buy. Those visitors tend to arrive with high intent — they’ve already been pre-qualified by the AI’s recommendation. If you’re not measuring that traffic, you can’t know how much business it’s driving, which content earns AI citations, or whether your GEO efforts are working.
How to track it in GA4
The practical setup: create a segment or channel grouping that captures referrals from the AI domains — the ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistant referrers — and monitor it as its own source. Some of this traffic will still land in “direct” (AI apps don’t always pass a referrer cleanly), so the picture is imperfect, but even a partial view of AI referral traffic is far better than none.
Watch three things: how much AI referral traffic you’re getting and its trend, which landing pages it hits (that tells you which content the AI is citing), and how it converts versus other sources. That last one usually surprises people — AI-referred visitors often convert well because the recommendation did the pre-selling.
What to do with the data
Once you can see it, act on it. The pages AI sends traffic to are the ones getting cited — study them, protect them, and make more like them. If a competitor’s category is sending them AI traffic and yours isn’t, that’s a GEO gap to close. And as the channel grows, factor AI referral into how you value content: a page that earns AI citations is worth more than its raw Google ranking suggests.
This is a channel in its infancy, which is exactly why measuring it now is an advantage. The brands that start tracking AI traffic today will understand and grow it while their competitors are still calling it “direct.” Set up the tracking, watch the trend, and build toward it.
